Myself

Eric Maillet
(2015)

Myself is a digital autonomous system, made from a screen, a speaker, a webcam and a tiny computer. It works continuously and reacts when a visitor faces the screen. Travel narratives are primarily stories of meeting the Other. According to these narratives, regardless of the destination, it would seem that there is a universal given; otherness is enunciated by a welcom phrase, name, age, origin, and a farewell phrase.
Social networks also offer travel and meeting opportunities. Here, our image captured by the webcam and displayed live on the screen, is questionned randomly by ways of interruptions by phrases from foreign people facing their webcam. All those videos of locutions are recorded from different social networks.
